Mesenchymal stem cell therapy in Rheumatoid Arthritis

Chapter 8 – Kay et al. (2016)

Keywords: Mesenchymal stem cell therapy; rheumatoid arthritis; regenerative medicine; inflammation; swelling; joint pain

This chapter from the ‘bone and cartilage regeneration’ textbook outlines in detail the causes of rheumatoid arthritis, various methods of stem cell treatment and finally the clinical results and various benefits highlighted in several MSC treatments for humans.

Some key findings from these human trials were the necessity for ‘top-up’ or booster treatments, as patients receiving these annual top-up treatments were reporting maximum benefits.  An increase in regulatory T cells, as well as reduced inflammation and swelling in the problematic joints, were consistent findings across the studies.
